GENUINE DEER STONES
WHAT IS A DEER STONE?
Until December 21, 2010 I had no idea what to call them and then I decided they were GENUINE DEER STONES.
Deer have the same digestive system as any bovine, multi-chamber stomachs. This allows them to digest a portion of what they eat and save
the rest as cud to regurgitate and eat at a later time. Hence the term
"CHEW THEIR CUD".
Each day for several months I have found stones in the feed bowls in amounts of 1,2,3 or as many as 5. What the deer do is pick up a stone and hold it between their cheek and jaw/teeth and the rotation motion of chewing aided by the stone grinds their food for digestion.
The deer deposit these stones, in the bowls and find new ones. I guess it
is like tooth brushes - they wear out and you buy a new one,
it's a hygene thing.
This has to be fact -- or they are just leaving me the stones as a tip.
